About Us:

 

Equality Fitness & Recreation is a mobile service – meaning we have no brick and mortar and instead we bring sport, fitness and recreation to you in your home or community.

Our professionals hold graduate and bachelor’s degrees in Adapted Physical Activity, Kinesiology, and Recreation.

 

Our professionals also hold some of Canada’s highest levels of fitness certifications:

 

  • Certified Exercise Physiologist (CSEP-CEP)

  • Certified Strength & Conditioning Coach (NSCA-CSCS)

  • Exercise is Medicine – Level 2 (EIMC-2)

  • Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA)

Our Team

MEET THE FOUNDER - Bobbi-Jo Atchison

Amanda Ebert

Amanda Ebert is passionate about creating healthy communities where everyone can flourish! After completing a kinesiology degree from the University of Alberta in 2008, Amanda worked at The Steadward Centre as a team lead of the Free2BMe program. This is where her passion for supporting health, wellness, sport, and physical activity opportunities for families experiencing disability was ignited.

 

In 2019, she completed a Masters Degree in Adapted Physical Activity and is also a registered kinesiologist and physical literacy instructor. She remains engaged in teaching and research at the University of Alberta and is a volunteer on several local and provincial committees within the recreation and sport sector.

 

Amanda believes that collaboration is the best way to success, and as such, continues to work closely with researchers, students, parents, and community professionals to exchange knowledge, and grow as a professional in the field.

Jessica Imppola

Jessica received her Bachelors of Kinesiology in 2011 from the University of Alberta with a specialization in sports performance, then proceeded to obtain her certification to become a Certified Exercise Physiologist through CSEP (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology), and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA (National Strength and Conditioning Association).

 

Jessica’s work experience primarily revolves around working with individuals experiencing disability and chronic conditions.

 

Her philosophy is to meet you wherever you are on your journey to fitness. By working on your technique and developing a program specific to your needs, Jessica strives to empower and teach you the tools you need to work towards your goals.

 

Jessica is also working towards becoming an acupuncturist.

 

Janet Cheng

Janet graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Recreation, Sports and Tourism (BARST) with a focus in Therapeutic Recreation.

 

Janet has been working as a Recreation Therapist for over 4 years with a wide variety of populations from inpatient rehabilitation to the outpatient community and assisting with transitioning from hospital to home.

 

Janet is dedicated to delivering a person-centered and holistic approach to therapy by breaking down barriers, exploring new opportunities and skills, and providing adaptations or modifications to leisure and recreation activities that are meaningful to you. 

Janet traveled to Rishikesh, India to complete her 200 Hr Yoga teacher training to further develop her personal and professional practice. Emphasizing the importance of living a balanced life and surpassing the stereotypical ideals of yoga and recognizing the development of unique sessions to bring harmony to life.

With over 10 years of experience in the field, Bobbi-Jo Atchison has dedicated her career to supporting individuals experiencing disability and chronic conditions to get active.

 

With a wide range of experience in developing partnerships, teaching, research, accessibility and direct service delivery through the University of Alberta and The Steadward Centre for Personal & Physical Achievement, Bobbi-Jo has now expanded her vision to ensure equal access for ALL individuals (respectful of age, impairment, gender identity, sexual orientation, cultural background, spirituality and mental health) to be active directly within their own communities and homes.

 

Bobbi-Jo’s combination of education and professional certifications provides a unique bridge between fitness, physical activity and recreation unparalleled by others in the field.

 

Along with obtaining a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and a Master’s degree in Adapted Physical Activity, Bobbi-Jo holds Canada’s highest level of fitness certification – Certified Exercise Physiologist (CEP) and is an award-winning Recreation Therapist through the Alberta Therapeutic Recreation Association.

Mackenzie Bender

Mackenzie graduated with Distinction from the University of Alberta in 2019 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Kinesiology majoring in Adapted Physical Activity. She started her University career at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia on an NCAA Fastball Scholarship.

 

Mackenzie is a Registered Kinesiologist and a Certified Personal Trainer under the Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology (CSEP-CPT).

 

She believes that every person is different and for that reason, everyone trains and requires their own personal program in order to succeed based on their abilities. Every exercise can be adapted in order to best fit each individual and Mackenzie works hard to ensure she is working with people’s passions while helping the achieve their goals.

 

Outside of work Mackenzie enjoys playing fastball, soccer, volleyball and tap dance. She likes to volunteer her time by giving back to her sport through mentoring young pitchers and fastball players in her community. She also likes the challenge of Escape Rooms and loves to attend Music and Cultural Events in and around Edmonton.

TEACHING

Our team teaches courses within the Faculty of Kinesiology, Sport, & Recreation at the University of Alberta. Classes include:

  • KIN 471: Physical Activity for Individuals with Developmental Impairment

  • KIN 472: Physical Activity for Individuals with Physical Impairment

  • KIN 207: Human Growth and Development

  • KRLS 370: Assessment and Service Delivery in Adapted Physical Activity and Therapeutic Recreation

We are proud to support the training of the next generation of professionals. Our team frequently supports practicum students from the University of Alberta.
